Journeys Through
History and Memory
Private journeys through the Netherlands and Europe — from single-day experiences to fully personalised multi-day travel.
It started with just one walk in Amsterdam, following in the footsteps of Anne Frank.
Now I travel all over the Netherlands and Europe with people. And every time it’s still a new experience.
Various
journeys
With When Then Was Now, I bring together my private historical journeys in the Netherlands and across Europe. I’m Martin van Elmpt, a historical investigator and private guide, and every journey is shaped around your interests, pace and questions.
Some journeys last a few hours, others several days. They can focus on World War II battlefields and remembrance, family history, Dutch history and culture, landscapes or a personal connection to the past.

What to expect
It’s your day, your journey!
Before we meet, let me know what draws you to this journey. I can prepare a fully personal itinerary, or guide you through the sites and stories that matter most. We travel at your pace.
Comfortable, flexible and personal
I pick you up at your hotel and together we shape the rhythm of the day. Bring your own lunch or stop somewhere along the way — whatever feels right for you. Questions are always welcome.
More than just history
Every journey is also a conversation. Over the years, the stories, questions and reflections shared by my guests have deepened my own understanding — and have become part of what I can now share with you.
Frequently Asked
Questions
Here are some of the questions my guests ask me before or during our time together.
Are all journeys private?
Yes. All journeys are private and designed exclusively for you and your group. This allows us to travel at your pace and focus on the places and stories that interest you most.
Can journeys be customised to my interests?
Absolutely. Every guest is different. Some visitors are interested in World War II, others in family history, Dutch culture, genealogy or specific military units. Before the day, we discuss your interests so I can prepare a journey tailored to you.
Where do journeys start?
Most journeys begin with pickup from your hotel or accommodation. Depending on the itinerary, I can collect you from Amsterdam or other locations within the Netherlands. Some journeys start in Brussels, Maastricht or even London.
Are journeys suitable for people with little knowledge of history?
Yes. Some guests have spent years studying the subject, while others are visiting a location for the first time. The journeys are adapted to your level of knowledge and interests, making them enjoyable for both enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
How long are the journeys?
Most journeys are full-day experiences, but shorter and multi-day itineraries are also possible. Whether you have a few hours, a single day or several days available, we can create a journey that fits your schedule.
